Original writing – My Decision about a Scary Ride

As we entered the gigantic theme park on a lovely summer day a voice from behind us shouted, â€Å"STOP!† We quickly turned around like spinning machines and we saw a 6 foot tall security guard running toward us like fast cheetah, his face was red like a rosy red tomato and it looked like his hat was going to fall off. I got a bit nervous because he was running towards us like we had just killed someone. I turned around and looked at Alisha and I saw that she was looking down with embarrassment, then I looked around me and I saw that everyone was staring at us like we had committed some sort of crime. â€Å"Girls you have forgotten your tickets† the security guard said. I felt so relieved that I let out a big sigh, like I had just ran a marathon, and Alisha and I started to laugh. After that we got our tickets from the security guard and headed towards the first ride which was called Space Invaders. When we got to the Space Invaders I could smell the horrible smell of oil, which smelt like a leaking gas, which made me feel a bit sick. I could also hear the big racket of the ride, and the screaming and shouting of the people on it, when it went whooshing past me in to the far distance like a crying baby slowly falling asleep. We waited in the queue for about ten minutes before it was our turn. When we got off the Space Invaders Alisha and I were just about to walk to the next ride when we saw a group of people that looked a bit like the characters from Harry Potter. One of them had bright red hair which made it look like his hair was on fire, this boy looked the same as Ronald from Harry Potter. Another boy that was with him had really big glasses that covered half of his face and it looked like the character of Harry Potter, and there was one girl that had white hair which made her look about 90 years old. I glared at there faces properly and they looked quite familiar so I said to Alisha, â€Å"Alisha don't these people look familiar?† and she said, â€Å"Yes they do look quite familiar.† Now we were both confused, so we decided to forget about it and walk off All of a sudden they started taking there hair off which made us realise that they were not a weird group of people but they were someone else. They were the rest of our mates Aziza, Amana and Sabah. Alisha and I looked at each other and burst out laughing. Then we said to the rest of our friends, â€Å"Come on lets go on the next ride†. All my friends wanted to go on the big tall rides but I was too frightened to go on them, but I was too ashamed to say it. The reason I didn't want to go on these big tall rides was when I was about five years old I sat on a really big ride and my seat belt was not tied properly so I nearly feel out. Ever since then I have hated sitting on big rides. I was not that ashamed to say it to Alisha because she is my best friend, but I do not want to say it in front of the rest of my friends because they will start calling me names. My friends were on their way to queue up for the next ride when I shouted, â€Å"I don't want to go on that ride yet, let's go on the Water Log first!† They all turned around and looked at me in a puzzled way and said â€Å"Okay we will go on that ride first but after that we are going on this big one.† I said, â€Å"Okay then†. I felt a bit relieved, but I was still scared. When we reached for the queue off the Water Log I saw that the queue was really long which made me feel a bit better because it will give me a bit more time to think of a good excuse not to go on the ride. All of my mates were laughing and enjoying themselves but I was just stood there like a statue staring at the big scary ride that I had to go on. Sabah noticed that I was staring at the ride so she said, â€Å"Why are you staring at that ride?† â€Å"Are you scared or something?† and I mumbled under my breath like a noise from a distance â€Å"No, why would I be scared.† Finally, it was our turn to sit on the Water Log. A big brown train splashing through the water like a sailing boat came in front of us and at the side of it said â€Å"The Water Log†. It was written in big bold writing. We quickly jumped in to the train and the ride set off. Whilst it was going up my eyes were fixed on the big tall ride, like a hunter on its target. I was the only one out of our group that was not enjoying themself. I was concentrating so hard on the next ride I was going to go on that I did not even realise that the ride I was sat on was about to finish. When we got off the Water Log Amana said, â€Å"Now its time for us to go on that big ride.† I just looked at her face and said â€Å"Can we go to the toilet first?† All of my mates glared at me and Alisha said, â€Å"We listened to you, now you will have to listen to us.† And I just mumbled, â€Å"Okay then.† Then all off my friends starting screaming with excitement. Alisha gripped me by the hand and dragged me towards the ride like she was dragging a rope in a game of tug of war. When we got to the ride I saw that the queue was really long. When I looked ahead of me the queue looked like a long colourful, slithery snake. I said to my friends, â€Å"I don't feel well you lot go on the ride and I will wait for you at the exit.† But they just said â€Å"No it will be better if we all go on together.† So I just said, â€Å"Okay then.† After this, I decided that I was not going to make any more excuses because it would make it obvious to my friends that I was scared. Whenever I looked up at the ride I could imagine myself as a five year old girl falling off which made me feel like crying. I could hear the whooshing of the ride vibrating in my ears and my heart was beating as fast as a drum. The biggest drop of the ride looked like a big blue tower stretched out 100 miles above the ground. And the rest of the ride stretched out in different directions as far as I could see. There was one more group of people to go on the ride and then it was our turn. I looked towards my friends and they were really excited, they were screaming and jumping around like kangaroos. Finally it was our turn, the people that were on the train before us got off, and all off the sudden the gates opened and people started to get on the ride. I went up to the seat and was just about to sit down when a weird feeling passed through me and made me blurt out to my friends â€Å"I don't want to go on this ride I am too scared.† My friends looked up at me and said, â€Å"But a thought you wanted to go on this ride.† They got off the ride and took me to a side where I told them the reason why I was scared of rides. When I told them the reason I expected them to laugh but they did not laugh at all Sabah just said, â€Å"Why are you ashamed that you are scared off a rollercoaster?† and Alisha said, â€Å"The first time I went on a rollercoaster I was even scared.† They all agreed with her. Then Aziza said, â€Å"Come on lets all of us go on this rollercoaster together.† But I was still too scared to go on it. So they decided that if I didn't go on it they were not going to go on it either which made me feel a bit guilty, so I decided that I will go on the rollercoaster with them. When I got on to the rollercoaster, I grabbed the metal part of the seat belt which was freezing cold like ice. I tied it up and got the bar of the seat down. Then all of a sudden the ride started to go. I could hear people screaming and shouting like animals from behind me but I could not see anything because I decided to close my eyes. When we get to the top all my friends started saying â€Å"Open your eyes.† So I opened my eyes and started screaming like a baby, but once it started going down the drop I really enjoyed myself. After the ride had stopped I enjoyed myself so much that I wanted to go on it again but unfortunately I couldn't because the ride had closed. I was not scared on a ride ever again. It's good to over come your fears.

In doing a follow up case study on teenage pregnancy, Spear (2004) discovered that the majority of the studies on the subject have been â€Å"qualitative in nature with relatively few studies that examine the personal perspective and worldview of the adolescents who experience pregnancy and childbearing† (Pediatric Nursing, 30.2). Conducting studies on the subject is one matter but failing to understand and shed light on the underlying factors or repercussions is in no way advising others on how to deal with or avoid being caught in the proverbial trap of teenage pregnancy. In Mirowsky’s study he not only found that the ratio of health problems expected given first birth under age 18 versus around age 34 equals that from currently being 14 years older at age 48. He states that the risk of dying in child birth also declines with having delayed first birth well beyond the end of puberty and a comparison to non-mothers of similar age and race/ethnicity shows that the correlation of motherhood with health problems and mortality hazard switches from detrimental to beneficial with delay beyond about age 22 (Journal of Health and Social Behavior, 46.1). Talking out of context, it is easy to conclude from his findings that delaying child birth and pregnancy to an age over 22 will not only prolong life, but put us in a better position to pursue needed social, educational, and financial needs. Mirowsky also enlightens us in the same issue, of some of the medical issues faced when dealing with teenage pregnancy. These issues are more common to mothers under the age of 20 compared to mothers in their 20s or 30s, including lung disease, eclampsia, kidney disease, fevers, seizures during labor, and congenital anomalies which may result from incomplete development of the reproductive system. The study also shows that first-time teenage mothers who receive proper pre-natal cares, which are more mature, and more stable than most of their counterparts, faces a higher risk of birthing premature and low birth weight babies than older first-time mothers with the same characteristics. Not to be discounted but â€Å"mothers older than 35 or 40 have a higher probability of developing gestational diabetes, placenta previa, breech presentation, postpartum hemorrhage, birth asphyxia, delivery before 32 weeks, birth weight below the 5th percentile, down syndrome, and stillbirth† (Jou rnal of Health and Social Behavior, 46.1). One study tells us that pregnancy at any age involves developmental change, and usually this spells disaster for a teenager because â€Å"when the stress of two developmental stages, adolescence and young adulthood are compressed, successful completion of both sets of tasks is compromised† (Rodriguez, 1995). This can put both the teen mother and their children at risk for social, developmental, and psychological retardation. Rodriguez seems to have the solution for these issues. He recommends that there be a â€Å"correlation of positive father/daughter relationships with feeling good about self, and the more positive relationships with mother and father† and â€Å"family involvement, regardless of how it is defined and measured† (Rodriguez, 1995). The study done by Spear (2004) does show that some teenage mothers who are sometimes forced to grow up and face their responsibilities actually do so. Two of her subjects have moved on and have come into their own, educationally, financially and socially and based on their experience, they can advise their children on the issue at hand. Conclusion Taking into consideration the global concern for teenage pregnancy and the literature studied, it is easy to surmise that that the group is indeed at a higher risk level for medical issues, social stagnation and educational retardation. The studies show that an underdeveloped body is in no way prepared to sustain another especially when poor diet, lack of knowledge, or lack of proper medical care are the most prominent factors to contend with. Social stagnation is possible since the age of both the child and parent in such close proximity of each other. Educational retardation is also most certainly a possibility for both the child and the parent since the basic needs will most likely be centralized around food, clothing, and shelter. The studies are in no way conclusive but it sheds a great deal of light on the issue at hand and provides information that can be used as a tool for guidance in curbing the problem.

Adaptation of the Fennec Fox to the Desert How the fennec fox (Vulpes zedra) has adapted to the desert environment The fennec fox is the smallest member of the Vulpes genus (formally in the Fennecus genus) only weighing 2.2 – 3.3 lbs. It is highly distinguishable by its huge ears measuring 6 inches, and a body length of up to 16 inches. It is a nocturnal animal that stays in its burrow and rests for the hottest parts of the day (The Nature of Wildworks, 2014.). It is a highly social animal and lives in family groups of up to 10 individuals (Fox, 1975). Formerly in the fennecus genus, it was later re-classified into the Vulpes genus which is the main taxonomic group of all foxes. Its geographical range is the north Sahara and Arabian deserts. The fox is under decline due to being hunted for the fur and pet trade which has had significant impacts on the wild species (The Nature of Wildworks, 2014.) The fennec fox has many adaptions to living in a desert environment. These can be broken down into 3 categories; Morphological, Physiological and Behavioural. Morphological Morphological adaptions are changes in the animal’s structure that helps it adapt to the extreme conditions of the Saharan dessert. One of the most significant morphological adaptations that the fennec possesses is its large ears. The ears are used to dissipate heat and maintain the optimum body temperature of the animal (Wathen, et al., 1971). The ear needs to be large to have a large surface area for heat dissipation. The statement that these actually cool the animal is not entirely true, they do not cool the animal and lower its body temperature, but instead maintain the optimum body temperature. In a study on jack rabbits, the ears were found to dissipate nearly 100% of all metabolic heat at air temperatures of only 30Â °C (Wathen, et al., 1971). This is only possible if the temperature of the fox is above the environmental temperature. The ears also play a critical role in nocturnal hunting (Wathen, et al., 1971). The large pinnae of the ear help direct low level sound i nto the ear which gives the fennec acute hearing allowing directional hearing (Ewer, 1973). This is a key adaption for hunting at night due to the low light levels, thus giving the fennec the ability to hunt effectively at night using sound as well as excellent night vision. The feet of the fennec are adapted to walking on the hot sand by having hairs covering their fleshy foot pads (Ewer, 1973). This prevents the foot from actually touching the scolding sand and will prevent injury when the fox is digging its burrow and walking across the hot dessert floor. The front paws are specially designed for digging burrows which the fennecs live and breeds in (Ewer, 1973). The fur of the fennec like most dessert animals is vital to coping with desert life. Not only does this insulate the animal, but studies have shown that the light fur of the animal can also reflect the solar radiation, therefore lessening the impact and reducing the heat load on the animal (Dawson Brown, 1970). This is most true in the fennec fox due to its sandy coloured or sometimes white fur. Meanwhile the thickness of the fur is a protection from the solar radiation of the skin. By creating this barrier, the fur prevents any damage to the skin from direct solar radiation. This is because the fur, as said before, partially reflects the solar radiation while the thicker deeper fur absorbs the heat (Dawson Brown, 1970). The heat absorption also helps the fox survive the freezing dessert nights while it feeds, by preventing the fennecs core body temperature from dropping too low. Physiological Physiological adaptions are changes in the animal’s system processes to enable them to adapt to changes in the environment. These changes enable the fennec to adapt to the extreme environment of the North African deserts. Carnivores, just as the fennec, are found in a number of deserts around the world. A major challenge that these organisms face is the replenishment of water. The fennec gains its water requirements solely from having mostly a carnivorous diet. The fennec, by eating alone, can maintain its water balance for over 100 days without having to drink (Vaughn, et al., 2000). This is done by the fennec having very concentrated urine that uses the least amount of water possible to function. This conserves a vast amount of water and coupled with its very low evaporate loss. Therefore it rivals small desert rodents in its water conservation (Vaughn, et al., 2000). This relates to selective predation and an ability to feed on a wide variety of food stuffs, while being abl e to become more economical with its metabolic water. The adaption of having a low basal metabolic rate is crucial to survival in dessert conditions. The fennec is no exception to this; it has one of the lowest BMRs of all Vulpes species of 60.7 percent (Golightly Ohmart, 1983). This means at rest the fox only uses the minimal amount of water needed to survive. This adaption allows a minimalized endogenous heat load which conserves metabolic water. This saving of water becomes critical in the desert due to the low precipitation levels and therefore having the adaptation of a low BMR helps maintain any dietary water acquired and conserves it. Behavioural Behavioural adaptations are changes in the animals conduct help it survive in a certain environment. Previously, little was known about the fennec foxes diet. It was previously thought that they were primarily insectivores and had barely any variety in their diet. However, a new study has shown that they are actually opportunistic feeders with food items being mostly insects, but it also feeds on small mammals and even plant material (Brahmi, et al., 2012). The study also shows that locality and abundance of food can also change the feeding behaviour of the fennec. This adaption is critical to the survival of any dessert animals. The ability to feed on many different food sources opens up many more niches and availability for the animal to survive and feed (Brahmi, et al., 2012). Panting is an adaption that requires short shallow respiration and is solely used in heat dissipation. Panting makes use of evaporative cooling of the mouth, lung and nasal mucosa. This is a very effective way of cooling down without having to sweat. This main advantage over sweating is that in sweating there is salt loss, while in panting there is not (Vaughn, et al., 2000). This is key to the survival of the fennec because of the shortage of food; therefore the fennec cannot regain the salt quicker than the animal uses up. If the fennec sweated this could become a huge problem, so it has overcome this problem by making use of the more efficient panting for heat dissipation (Vaughn, et al., 2000). Fennec fox families live and thrive in burrows; these help counteract the daily effects of high temperature and low humidity of the desert days. They provide shelter from sun exposure and the highest temperatures of the dessert day. A study in tortoises shows that burrows provide a great place to refuge in a desert environment. The study showed that the burrow at 10:00 -12:00 hrs had much higher humidity and lower temperature than the external environment (Bulova, 2002). This lowers the total evaporate water loss which helps the animal, in this case the fennec, conserve metabolic water, which is key to desert survival. Fennecs therefore make use of the much more stable and milder environment inside the burrow. This helps shelter the fennec from extreme conditions and helps conserve water. This is due to the soil temperature maintaining stability no matter what the conditions are outside. The burrow controls the internal environment due to the thermal insulating properties of the soil (Reichman Smith, 1990). Therefore the burrow is cooler during the day and warmer during the freezing desert nights. Conclusion To conclude there are many adaptations the fennec has; may that be morphological, physiological and behavioural. The adaptations are a necessity to survive in such an extreme climate, such as the dessert; with high heat loads during the day, freezing temperatures in the night, food and water sources are scarce. The adaptions that the fennec utilises all boil down to protection from the incredible temperature change in the dessert, by having large ears to dissipate heat and fur that can reflect but also absorb the heat. This gives protection from solar radiation during the day, and insulation during the night. The other main reason for having many complex adaptations is to conserve water. The fennec’s metabolic water level is maintained by having a low BMR which uses less water in metabolic activity at rest, and also the concentrated urine which reduces the loss of water via waste. In my mind the fennec fox is perfectly adapted to cope with the extremes of desert life, by contr olling its water conservation and body temperature. While most parents realize there are normal struggles between parents and teens as their sons and daughters struggle for independence and identity, they are often shocked by the length and intensity of the conflict. They are stunned by apparent rejection of some of their most sacred values and confused by their teenagers "acting up" and "acting out." In attempting to become psychologically independent of their parents, teens often attempt to move completely away from any control or influence by their parents. When the rejected teenager reaches the limit of patience and tolerance, he or she lashes out -- rejecting the family, the school, the church, the s... ...en. As a parent you also have to make sure you have certain expectations that need to be followed. You have to expect cooperation and courtesy at home as well as to be able to get a good night?s sleep without worrying where your teenager is. There are no magic, easy solutions. However, a parent is wise to communicate absolute support to a young teenager by letting them know that you love them and will always be there for them. As an adult, you must model acceptable adult behavior in all situations. Our world is made up of many diverse cultures. These cultures have influenced many aspects of this world that we live in today. Understanding and developing knowledge about these cultures is vitally important. Having the ability to understand other cultures will allow you to look deeper into your own cultural values. We will begin with looking at the nation’s largest minority group, which are the Hispanic Americans (Healey, 2012). The Hispanic Americans are divided into many groups. The three largest groups are the Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cuban Americans (Healey, 2012) and these are the three that will be focused on. Mexican Americans are the largest Latino, or Hispanic American, group. There are many events that have had an influence on the Mexican American way of life. Immigration from Mexico flourished during the Mexico Revolution in 1910. Trouble was arising in Mexico and many people were fleeting hoping to stray away from the issues. After World War II, there was an increased demand for labor. This caused an increase in Mexican American immigration as well. The government of the United States fought back towards the immigration. â€Å"Operation Wetback† was put into place in the 1950s as a program in which almost 4 million Mexicans were deported. Mexican American’s privacy was vandalized, raided and broken into. Operation Wetback caused hard feelings towards Americans and has been a continuing issue for Mexican Americans to accept (Healey, 2012). Just like religion is important in this culture, extended family is as well. The extended family of African Americans is typically described as close-knit. The blood ties of this culture are the strongest bonds. All adults are responsible for a child’s upbringing. They are part of the community and it is the adult’s job to help them grow. Anna M. Kerttula’s “Antler on the Sea” Essay

In her book, Antler on the Sea, Kerttula discusses how Soviet government policies aimed to integrate the northern peoples of the USSR in reality helped the groups to maintain their identities as they defined themselves in opposition to one another. According to Kerttula, â€Å"in Sireniki, the very system that sought to control and homogenize difference reinforced it† (155). Kerttula illustrates the extent to which much of the native culture has survived the Soviet period. This trend is particularly prevalent as Kerttula progresses through her descriptions of Yup’ik, Chukchi, and ‘Newcomer’ lifestyle and practices. The development of collective group identity and cultural transformation among northern indigenous peoples in the Soviet Union was heavily influenced not only by the structure of the Soviet system but also by the provoking of oppositional relationships between the groups. Kerttula effortlessly explains the interrelationships of the many opposing ‘forces’: tundra and sea, Yup’ik and Chukchi, natives and newcomers, and old and new ways in the North. These relationships were based on prior cultural forms, symbols and meanings but as a result of Soviet influence, local cultural boundaries were transformed and the ensuing dialogue of difference was encouraged. As Kerttula asserts, it is the â€Å"we/they dichotomy that for many anthropologists defines an ethnic group† (152). The Soviet state, with its ideological, political and economic goals, changed the structure of the interactions between local and immigrant groups, but was unable to change the cultural content of their discourse. According to Kerttula, historically the Yup’ik, Chukchi and Russians had very limited contact with one another. Prior to forced relocations and settlements that occurred with collectivization, the Yup’ik lived at Sireniki and met with the Chukchi occasionally for the limited purpose of trade (123). After collectivization the three groups were forced to live in a single locality and thus new dynamics and an increased frequency of interaction changed the ways that the Yup’ik, Chukchi, and Russians (Newcomers) worked together. As Kerttula points out, the cultural definitions and descriptors of the three groups were not always in agreement; quite often they clashed. For example, Kerttula generalizes on the Newcomer’s feelings of superiority to the Yup’ik  and Chukchi. Accordingly, â€Å"this attitude of superiority was intensified by the physical separation of the three groups, both at their place of work and in their free time† (152). It was the Newcomer’s familiarity with the Russian social structure that in fact led to this so-called ‘superiority’ (152). Similarly, the Yup’ik and Chukchi view one another as, for instance, receiving favoritism in their language instructions at the local school. Parents are cited as believing the other group to be receiving better instruction: â€Å"The Chukchi complained that there were more Yup’ik lessons than Chukotkan, and Yup’ik parents complained that the quality of the Yup’ik lessons were substa ndard† (154). Unlike the Nivkhi described by Grant, the Yup’ik and Chukchi do not express a feeling of ‘culturelessness’. As both groups have been able to maintain dominant aspects of their traditional lifestyle, the sense of loss seemed to be felt to a lesser degree (although they did ‘lose’ language and the freedom to hunt whales). The Yup’ik could remain defined primarily by their affinity for and connections to the sea while the Chukchi could remain defined primarily by their affinity for and connections to the tundra. Modernity within the community of Sireniki was integrated in a way that was advantageous for the people. As Kerttula points out however, instead of questioning the government’s socialist tactics, most looked more locally to the ‘others’ in the community (151, 153). These collective identities enabled the Yup’ik, Chukchi, and Newcomers to accept Soviet designated social and economic conditions by infusing these conditions with their own cultural knowledge, making them meaningful and reproducible. Kerttula captures the disharmony tolerated by indigenous people in the Soviet period as they retained their own beliefs and customs while adapting to altered environments and economic change. As Kerttula reiterates many times, modernity has brought many unexpected and unwelcome changes. Most importantly, the state has used the discourse of modernity to once again portray indigenous peoples in a way that suits their needs as an administrative body. Instead of looking to the heavy restrictions enforced by the Soviet system, the people of Sireniki â€Å"focused their discourse on each other† and looked to each other as being a source of some of their problems (155). Toward the end of her book, Kerttula points out a fundamental problem in the collective group definitions: if the groups defined their identities in opposition to one another, what happens to those who married cross-culturally? In her discussion of possible division within the community into different associations, this problem came to the forefront. As one of Kerttula’s informants asks, to which association would the child of both Yup’ik and Chukchi parents belong? (152). Theoretically the three groups existed separate from the other two. In reality though, intermarriage and the creation of friendships were relatively common inter-ethnically. The individual cultures were not only subjective, but also laden with political and social questions of identity and personhood (151). What makes the case at Sireniki unique is that three distinct cultural groups were essentially forced to live together in relative peace while each simultaneously sought to prolong and promote their own traditional practices and beliefs. They are more prepared for the ever changing heath care field because their main focus, are evidence –based practice. They are taught to think independently, use judgment, critical thinking, reasoning and decision making skills, to understand the situation at hand before providing care, and by utilizing these skill they are better able to work within interdisciplinary team and have better patient care outcome. An example of this was observed in a patient care situation on a med surgical unit, where the ADN nurse was taking care of a patient with history of uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension who was about to be discharged. His blood glucose was regularly monitored, medication was dispensed appropriately and she made sure that he was receiving the appropriate diet tray from the kitchen. However when his call light was answered by the BSN nurse she noticed that he had a packet of potato chips and some cookies on his bedside table that was open. She addressed his need, then told him that she noticed the cookies and potato chips at his bedside, which he admitted to be snacking on, and added that the cookies were sugar free and chips were not very salty and that was all he could really afford. The BSN nurse was able to address the situation at hand and was able to teach the pt that even though a packet may read sugar free did not mean it was ok to have. Since it can be loaded with carbohydrates, which break down into sugar. She then collaborated with interdisciplinary team of dietician and social services to prepare this patient for discharge, where this patient and his family were taught how to comply with his diet, by learning how read labels, choose foods, and the important of doing so. Social services ensure that he was provided with the information of community based resources in his neighborhood that will attend to his financial as well as his social needs. Even though the ADN nurse’s bedside nursing was appropriate, it was clear that the two extra years of understanding the concept behind the skills separated a nurse that use critical thinking from one that performed task. The Roller Skating Rink Adolescents like to have a place they can call their own. In the 80’s and early 90’s, teenagers would hang out at the mall, the arcade, or many other spots. When I was a little girl, growing up in a small town, meant you had to travel to the city next door in order to find your weekend excitement. Usually that would be roller skating with your friends at â€Å"Skate World†, while listening to the favorite group of the month. Having never done this as a child, my sister decided one afternoon that she would take me roller skating. I was amazed to find a little world filled with life blooming on a 70 X 160-ft cement slab known as a roller skating rink. As soon as we entered the building which housed the rink, the warm, nostalgia scent of popcorn hit that part of my brain where dusty cobwebbed memories live, memories of my own childhood. We made our way past a group of exuberant teenagers at the snack bar until we reached the skating rink. Skinny, hard benches, made for small butts, lined one wall. We took a seat and scanned the rink. My eyes paused to read a sign; white, block letters on a black background warned, â€Å"Skate At Your Own Risk. As my sister smiled back at me, I paused for a minute and thought, what have I gotten myself into. Meanwhile, two young men swaggered past us: confident, heads held high, eyes focused on their destination. I leaned over, looking down the long row of benches, curious to find out where they were going. Their confidence lagged a bit as they approached a large group of their peers, including several young ladies. Skates became a blur of color: green, purple, blue, pink, and red–speeding by fast and furious. I felt the rush of wind on my face as I caught the musky scent of cologne mixed with sweat. A swirl of communication was taking place, none of it involving speech. The tactile sense had kicked in: punching and shoving of young lions trying to impress their ladies of choice, bodies brushing by each other, and the gentle touch of hand on arm. A statuesque blond, six inches taller than her partner, slipped. â€Å"Catch me, I’m falling on purpose,† her body language seemed to say. Eye contact was prevalent. Most skaters continually scanned the rink, found the one they were looking for and BAM!!! eyes quickly darted away. This testing of emotional waters went of for several hours; boys and girls trying on relationships of men and women like kids playing dress up in their parents’ clothes.
